About the Programme
Imaging Informatics sits at the intersection of clinical radiology and digital health infrastructure. This programme has been developed in direct response to the evolving demands placed upon imaging professionals working within NHS and wider healthcare environments, where the effective management, interpretation and governance of digital imaging data is now central to safe and efficient patient care.
The Imaging Informatics programme is offered at three levels of engagement, ranging from a focused two-day intensive introduction through to a full Postgraduate Certificate qualification. Each level has been designed to build upon the last, enabling practitioners to enter the programme at a point commensurate with their existing knowledge and professional development needs.
Delivered by experienced practitioners and academics with direct expertise in radiology informatics, the programme draws on real-world NHS systems and workflows. Participants will develop both a theoretical grounding and practical competence across areas including PACS, DICOM, RIS, EPR integration, data governance, image visualisation, and the emerging application of artificial intelligence and augmented reality within diagnostic imaging.
Why Imaging Informatics?
The increasing digitisation of healthcare has fundamentally changed how radiological data is acquired, stored, accessed and acted upon. Radiology professionals are now routinely expected to navigate complex multi-system environments, contribute to data governance decisions, and engage with rapidly developing technologies including AI-assisted diagnostics and advanced visualisation tools.
Despite this, structured education in imaging informatics has historically been limited. This programme addresses that gap — providing a rigorous, practice-informed curriculum that equips participants to operate with confidence and competence in modern digital radiology environments.

The programme is suited to a broad range of professionals engaged with diagnostic imaging and healthcare data systems, including radiographers, radiologists, imaging department managers, NHS informatics and IT professionals, and those with responsibility for PACS/RIS administration or digital transformation within their organisation. No prior postgraduate study is required for the introductory level; entry requirements for the intermediate and advanced levels are outlined within the respective course pages.
A Clear Pathway from Practice to Postgraduate Study
The intermediate and advanced levels together constitute the Postgraduate Certificate in Imaging Informatics, validated by the University. Successful completion of the PGCert may also serve as a foundation for further postgraduate study, including progression to the MSc in Advanced Professional Practice in Health.
